VANCOUVER - Western Canada’s premiere research institute dedicated to advancing the health of children and families has launched a major capital expansion project that will double its capacity and make it the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada.

The 121,000 square foot expansion is scheduled for completion in December 2007.

“This is an incredible success story for British Columbia,” said Dr. Stuart McLeod, Executive Director, Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI). “Over the last decade, CFRI has made major strides toward establishing itself as a world leader. This expansion will accommodate literally dozens of international researchers who are keenly interested in joining our team.”

The Child & Family Research Institute, located on the campus of BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, agencies of the Provincial Health Services Authority, conducts research into the cause, prevention and eventual cure of diseases in affiliation with the University of British Columbia. Major areas of focus are cancer, diabetes, infectious and inflammatory diseases, reproductive health, molecular medicine & therapeutics, community child health, and healthcare innovation & improvement.

One of its most significant benefits is its close proximity to the two tertiary care, academic teaching hospitals serving British Columbia’s children and women, enabling researchers to collaborate with their hospital counterparts to deliver ‘bench to bedside’ care for patients.

Part of the Institute’s growing reputation is its success in attracting grants and awards. It consistently posts success rates that are higher than the national average.

The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has committed to raise $22.5 million toward the $42.4 million expansion. The opportunity to name the new facility is valued at $20 million.
